Nothing Could Be Finer Than Breakfast At The Diner...

... Foote's Port Henry Diner, that is...

My mister and I needed a break after a rather rough summer, so off to the "Adirondack Coast" of northern New York state we went. Now, when we travel, of course we prefer to dine vintage-style. I recently learned that the former Miss Port Henry Diner (a Ward & Dickinson dining car) had been spruced up and reopened by a new owner. Port Henry, NY is a village delightfully poised at the edge of Lake Champlain with the Adirondack Mountains as a backdrop.

The last time we trekked northward to the village, I was saddened to see the diner looking a bit forlorn, decorated with "For Sale" signs.

But when we arrived this time on a Saturday morning in September...

...the diner peeked out and invited us to come in.

And, well, vive la diffĂ©rence! We were greeted by the bright smiling face of

Miss CherryBubbles is ready for a hearty breakfast, if only she can get Mister to put away the camera for a moment so we can go inside.

Counter or booth?

Why, booth, of course!

Two cups of coffee... and, yes, that IS a marble table!

Mister chose the Breakfast Bake. Mister chose wisely.

 Real Maple Syrup, by golly!

What a terrific experience it was to enjoy a truly delicious breakfast served with a smile
in a historic diner! We shall return.

Many thanks to Donald Foote for
bringing this delightful diner back to life!

If you find yourself in the Port Henry area, be sure to stop at the diner
for breakfast or lunch... or both!

Let's Take This Outside!

One recent summer Sunday morning, the backyard looked so inviting that we decided to head outdoors for breakfast. Nothing beats bacon and eggs cooked over a fire - or, in this case, in a big skillet on a vintage plaid grill!

On the left is a Skotch grill and on the right, we have a Grillryte. The Skotch grill has seen quite a bit of action on picnic-y outings, but this was the maiden voyage of the Grillryte. Don't you think plaid makes everything more fun?

Of course, coffee is a must for Sunday morning breakfast! Since we haven't yet acquired a swell campfire coffee pot, the Sunbeam vacuum pot will have to do.

Now, once we get some good coals, we'll start cookin'!
Careful, dearest, don't burn yourself - I don't think we have any Unguentine...

The bacon's sizzling and the bread is toasting - won't be long now....

Finally we're ready to fry some eggs - hope I don't break a yolk! Connncentraaate...

And before long
, we've got a mighty fine backyard Sunday breakfast. Don't be shy, just grab a plate and dig in!

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, but nobody said it couldn't be the most fun too!

Here's to breakfast in the great outdoors...

Sunday is a lovely day for...

Sunday Waffles

On Sundays, we usually make the breakfast that we don't have time for during the week. Darling hubby makes coffee in a vintage Sunbeam vacuum pot, and let me say it easily makes a fine cuppa. Occasionally, we poach eggs in a 1950s Sunbeam egg cooker - makes three at a time. And if we're having toast, it goes right into the vintage radiant control Sunbeam toaster, which magically lowers the toast in by itself and slowly raises it when toasting is completed. Now, really, we do have other brands of vintage appliances besides Sunbeam... honest. In fact the waffle iron you're about to see in use is a 1920s Universal by Landers, Frary & Clark.

This past Sunday, it was a toss-up... eggs in some form, or waffles. Since we'd been to the local diner and had eggs on Saturday, waffles won the day. So I chose my weapon... oops, I mean apron... and pulled out The Encyclopedic Cookbook (1950) and mixed the batter for Sunday Waffles.

My current batter bowl is a contemporary one, made of the modern version of "melmac" (and, no I don't mean the planet that ALF was from... why do I even remember that tidbit). I aspire to own a lovely jade-ite Fire King batter bowl someday. Meanwhile, this one serves the purpose.

Here's the waffle iron in action - pretty exciting, eh? See the bubbling batter... and a few minutes later - voila!

Just add sweet cream butter, real maple syrup, and a side of honey-cured bacon! Or, for something a little different, try making some Red Eye Gravy to put on your waffles ;)

Here's to a delicious breakfast of Sunday Waffles made whilst enjoying a little quality time with my main man and my prime pooch.
