My Kingdom for a Sensible Oxford...

Every day Mr. Lucky and I have a walk about our tiny town... after all a dog needs exercise, and how can you resist this face?

My walking sneakers had become completely worn out, so I ordered new ones. Sadly, walking shoes in this day and age are basically bulky (and, may I say odd-looking) sneakers, or "athletic shoes," if you prefer. I like to call them my Frankenstein walkers...

What I wouldn't give for a good old-fashioned sensible oxford, say, like this...

Between needing an extra wide width and having a couple foot issues, I can only dream of owning "stout hiking shoes" like Nancy Drew always wore whilst tracking down a mystery or confronting thugs and misers.

On the other hand, a quick perusal of Zappos.com does yield a few possibilities for a duck-footed vintage-lover like myself...

I suspect these choices are the closest I'll ever get to a good old-fashioned sensible oxford,
so I just might order myself a pair or two ;)

What particular item of vintage goodness have you had trouble finding? Do you look high and low on the chance you'll find the real thing or opt for a more accessible contemporary "vintage-style" version?

I am also blessed (??) with the Feet of Flintstone and the Cankles of Doom. I must make do with vintage repro (when they fit) or vintage-y shoes. I spend a lot of time returning shoes I buy online (amen for zappos and shoebuy.com's return shipping free!!)

oh, almost forgot - you didn't say what size you are but if you're a nine or higher try http://www.barefoottess.com. they have wide width AND large size remix shoes (not wide though)

"Cankles of Doom" - you slay me, Inky - lol!

I'm actually about a size 7 when I can get shoes wide enough - otherwise around a 7.5. I really WISH I could buy from Remix - love their shoes!

Saddle shoes and Sunglasses! I always wanted a real honest to god parir of black and white Saddle Oxfords. but the ones iv found are either for girls (and I KNOW boys wore them too) or they are ex golf shoes....Same with sunglasses!

Mick - Men definitely wore saddle shoes, especially in the 1920s & 1930s ;) Check out muffys.com - they have saddle shoes for men in a few different color choices. :)

You may be interested in these - as worn and recommended by Lizzie Maine on the Fedora Lounge:

They're an exact replica of a 1940s sensible oxford! And come in Extra wide :)

Thank you, Fleur :) I had been following the shoe thread at the Fedora Lounge with great interest, but somehow missed those. Sometimes have trouble with heels, but I'll check these out!

Is that a "wire haired pointing griffon?" I enjoyed reading your blog this morning.

Hi Sassy Lassies - Funny that you mention wire-haired pointing griffon. We were convinced when we first got Mr. Lucky from the shelter that he might have some of that breed (he does point every so often). Now we're not so sure. He's definitely some sort of mix...

Glad you enjoyed the blog post :)
