We're havin' a heat wave here in the northeastern US, so I've been trying to come up with ways to stay cool in my un-air-conditioned old-timey two-story house.
I'm tempted to try this suggestion...
But no, I think Marilyn's right - too icky.
Back to square one. ;)

In the old-timey days people would sleep on the porch (or the fire escape in the city). Maybe it's easier to just buy an air conditioner. Maybe you could find an antique one, and have it retro-fitted with new guts. Or maybe just a fan. Either way, nice clip from the 7 Year Itch...one of my favorite flicks :)
I struggled with not wanting an ugly air conditioner for a long time, but had to give in. I painted the big monstrosity pink! I used it for a ledge to sit pretty flowers on, and everyone knew my house as the one with the pink air conditioner. Matched my flamingos too! Mom told me in the old days, her mom would lay a blanket down in front of the fan and let it blow over a huge chunk of ice!! Zootsuitmama
Chris - I've often thought a summer sleeping porch on the second floor of my house would be wonderful... maybe someday ;)
Zootsuitmama - A flamingo pink air conditioner?! Bet the neighbors talked about that for weeks ;)
